Despite our frustration and cynicism we still encounter a sense of hope when exposed to ideals that invite us to live at a higher plane of consciousness than that of obsessive consumers waiting in queue for the latest gadget to show all our friends. Something deep inside us is awakened when presented with suggestions such as Albert Einstein’s, that our true goal is to, "Try not to become a man [or woman] of success but rather a man [or woman] of value." What quality within is awakened and inspired by such a suggestion if not our own deepest nature answering the call to live up to our highest ideal through which we gain the privilege of experiencing the quality of life we yearn so deeply for?
And should we attempt to answer this call, how exactly might we go about responding to suggestions such as these, in order to achieve such a lofty objective? For we do not imagine ourselves heroes and heroines. We have been exposed to the forces of cultural conditioning and consumer marketing for far too long to hold out any reasonable expectations of “rising above the fray of consumerism,” to the rarified air of the hero’s and heroine’s journey of adventure. Instead we suppose that this category of men and women are a select few who possess some special qualities of being that we can never hope to attain. At our best, we suppose we might become pale reflections of their radiant examples.
Yet this self-doubt is precisely the mistaken belief that our life-force refutes with every beat of our quickening heart when exposed to another story of human transcendence. It is the hero and heroine within each of us that is awakened and attracted by the example of those who fought through their own self-doubts and incrementally moved towards the fulfillment of those qualities of being they refused to surrender to anything or anyone less that their highest expression of their highest selves. The deepest truth of each of us is that, through the stories and examples of hero’s and heroine’s, past and present, our own life-force is nourished and our yearning to live the life we came out of the universe to live, redoubled.
Setting aside, for the moment, our voices of judgment and cynicism suggesting this kind of life is practically unattainable, if such a life were possible, how might we go about nurturing our life-force and answer the call to live the life we are capable of living?
We might begin by recognizing that, while powerless to change the world, we always retain the right and power to choose how we will respond to the conditions we encounter in the world. Viktor Frankl got it right when he wrote, “Between stimulus and response there is space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
We need not be supermen or superwomen in order to make a conscious decision to choose how we will relate to the people and conditions we encounter in our daily routine. What would change for you if you made the intentional choice to respond to everyone you met today with courtesy, dignity and respect, to the best of your ability? What if you decided to look beyond the self-identified labels people attach to themselves and refused to see them as anything less than spiritual beings trying to penetrate the layers of stories suggesting they are nothing more than frail human beings struggling to get through life with as little pain as possible? What if you decided to treat them as if they are unique expressions of universal consciousness trying to awaken from the self-limiting delusion that they don’t deserve to receive love, connection and dignity? As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe noted, “If your treat an individual... as if he were what he ought to be and could be, he will become what he ought to be and could be.” Retrieved from http://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/quotes/j/johannwolf389073.html#Mcrb3OpxgMq635ez.99
And how, you ask, might so lofty an intention be realized in practical terms? It might be a simple as looking the store cashier in the eye and rather than seeing an anonymous role, see the human being beneath the role. Addressing that human being, ask them, “How are you doing today?” Not as a throw-away line, but with the conscious intensity of one living being addressing another living being. Whether that person recognizes your intention consciously or not, at a cellular level, their life-force will be stimulated and nourished by your energetic gift of seeing through the delusion of their imagined insignificance, by speaking directly to the best in them, to their deepest nature as unique expressions of the universe’s longing to express itself in conscious form. The energy you extend, and the energy they receive, is the same power that awakens and nourishes each of us when we are inspired by our heroes and heroines.
It is not necessary to save the world to experience the highest expression of your highest self. It is sufficient that you consciously choose to put your life in the intentional service of your unconditionally loving life-force and, to the best of your ability, one day at a time, to bring to life the unique expression of your noblest qualities of love, compassion, wisdom, tenderness, humility, gratitude and encouragement; your light, into your own life and then, through your actions, into the life of the world. This is the means to experience the life you yearn for. The paradox of this choice is that in order to extend your light into the world, you must first acknowledge and encounter it within your own being. It is through embracing and experiencing our own unconditionally loving life-force, and choosing to extend it into the world, that we honour and embody the irreplaceable life we came out of the universe to express and experience.
This is the means of answering the call of the Hero’s/Heroine’s call to adventure, the realization of your highest ideal of a consciously loving being choosing to fulfill your nature. This is the path to achieve the genuine happiness and quality of life you have been yearning to experience and express since the moment of your birth.
The choice is absolutely and exclusively yours to make. No power in the universe can prevent you from making this choice except yourself. Regardless of the conditions you encounter in your life you retain the exclusive power and capacity to choose your response and to the precise extent and degree that your choice is to live from your loving life-force, your experience will be that quality of being we mistakenly assume is the exclusive province of the mythological archetypes of antiquity.
You are so much more than you imagine. You are a unique and irreplaceable expression of Cosmic consciousness in form, and your whole purpose, in this life, is to experience and extend your unique expressions of unconditional love in your own life and the lives of everyone you touch, to the best of your ability, one day at a time. You already possess all the qualities of being necessary to experience the life, happiness, connection and meaning you yearn for. The only obstacle, to the realization of this extraordinary life you represent, is your refusal to see beyond the self-limiting stories you have accepted about yourself. Dare to pierce the bubble of your inadequacies to encounter those qualities of nobility, dignity, and love that lay within you waiting patiently for your permission to emerge and blossom.
The choice is absolutely and exclusively yours. May your choices bring you the life you were born to live, express, and celebrate.
Love and Hugs in Fellowship from one being of light to another.
