Research has clearly established that our bodies, immune systems, and brain development, all benefit from loving energy, and when love is withheld all of these aspects suffer. What more compelling evidence do we need than the simple wisdom that we understood as infants, before we got confused by all the stories from the outside world that implied we were somehow inadequate or undeserving of love and happiness. Without any knowledge of the outside world every infant is naturally drawn to loving energy. And every infant naturally recoils from hostility, and anger, and fear. Since unconditional love is our deepest nature, it makes sense that we experience emotional pain when we tear ourselves down. The intensity of the pain reveals the gap between these inaccurate, self-critical stories, and the truth of our own deepest nature.
So let’s see if we can connect with our life force right now: Think back to a time in your life when you were truly happy - When you felt it in your body. Perhaps it was your first kiss, or when you got engaged, or the birth of your child...or maybe it was the encouraging words of a teacher, or mentor who supported you when you were struggling. Do you remember how your body felt? What your body was feeling was the connection with your own unconditionally loving life-force. When we are in the presence of loving energy our body immediately recognizes it, just as our body recoils when we’re in the presence of hostility, anger, or fear. When we experience unconditional love, in any of its forms, forms such as tenderness, compassion, or gratitude, our body lets us know that something beautiful and life-affirming is taking place. It feels wonderful because we’re in perfect alignment with our own deepest nature. When we experience emotional pain and suffering it’s because we are temporarily out of touch with our unconditionally loving life force.
So as a Take-away Activity: I’d like to invite you to pay attention to how your body informs you about the level of alignment with your unconditionally loving nature. What behaviors or activities fill you with appreciation and gratitude, and which generate stress, fear, or suffering? What might you do to bring more appreciation and gratitude into your life?
In the next video we will examine how the stories we tell ourselves shape our experience and what we are willing and unwilling to allow into our life. I’m John Paterson - Thank you for joining me on this journey.
